Asexual awareness week means different things for different people. Some celebrate loud and proud; other take a more personal or vicarious route to the celebration. Why is this?
At the city pride weeks, you can see people dressed in flourishes of rainbows, the color of gay pride. And yet does there remain a level of censure fo those who do not conform to the traditional standards of deviation from the “norm”? You may disagree, but i think there is.
When you go onto Tumblr and the like, you’re not likely to find a whole bunch of gay or lesbian discourse. Maybe you’ll find some for the bi and transgender community, but mostly it tends to be focused on the asexual community. We are the unicorns of the LGBTQIA community.
But that’s why we have Asexual Awareness week. We aren’t espousing any sentiments of being batter. Just a longing for belonging, for people to know that we do exist and that we are like many of them.
To me, asexual awareness week is merely the time where I a able to know that there are people like me. I am not out to family or friends. Therefore, there isn’t many ways to express my aceness clearly. Sure, I have this blog. But being asexual, I tend to not have that support system behind me. So I do what I can.
I write about being asexual in a largely sexual society, I wear my ace ring proudly, ama daily fixture on the ACEapp and go to meetups with like-minded people. So even though I’m not among the out and proud people, I still have a place, a niche if you will, where i know where I belong.
Asexual awareness week has begun. I am asexual. I am aromantic. And I am aware of who I am.
